Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling? Common Causes

April 11, 2026 ยท KeepYinzCool

The fan is blowing. The system sounds like it is working. But your house is still warm. This is one of the most common AC complaints, and it has several possible causes โ€” ranging from a free fix to a call-the-pro situation.

Cause 1: Dirty Air Filter (Fix It Yourself)

A clogged filter is the number one reason ACs underperform. When the filter is blocked, air cannot flow over the evaporator coil properly. The coil gets too cold, frosts over, and stops absorbing heat from your home.

The fix: replace the filter. Check it monthly during summer.

Cause 2: Dirty Condenser Coil (Fix It Yourself)

The outdoor unit releases the heat your AC pulled from inside your house. If the condenser coils are coated in dirt, grass clippings, or cottonwood fluff, the unit cannot dump heat efficiently.

The fix: turn the system off, hose down the outdoor unit gently from the inside out. Clear any debris within 2 feet of the unit.

Cause 3: Frozen Evaporator Coil

If you see ice forming on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil, the evaporator is frozen. This blocks airflow and stops cooling. Causes include dirty filters, low refrigerant, or a failed blower fan.

The fix: turn AC off, set fan to ON, let ice melt completely (several hours). Replace the filter. If it freezes again after restart, call a tech.

Cause 4: Low Refrigerant

Refrigerant does not get used up โ€” if it is low, there is a leak. Low refrigerant means the system cannot absorb enough heat. You might notice the AC runs constantly without reaching the set temperature.

The fix: this requires a licensed HVAC tech to find the leak, repair it, and recharge the system. Not a DIY job.

Cause 5: Thermostat Issues

A miscalibrated or failing thermostat can cause the AC to short-cycle (turn on and off too quickly) or not run long enough to cool the space.

The fix: verify settings (COOL mode, temp set below room temp, fan on AUTO). Try replacing batteries. If the issue persists, the thermostat may need replacement.

Cause 6: Undersized System

If your AC has never really kept up during the hottest days, it may be too small for your home. This is common in Pittsburgh homes that have had additions built on, or where the original AC was sized for a smaller footprint.

The fix: a tech can do a load calculation to determine if your system is properly sized. If it is undersized, no amount of repair will fix the problem โ€” you need a larger unit.

Cause 7: Duct Leaks

In Pittsburgh homes with older ductwork, 20-30% of cooled air can leak into walls, attics, and crawl spaces before reaching your rooms. The AC is cooling โ€” just not cooling your living space.

The fix: a tech can test duct pressure and seal leaks. You can also inspect visible ductwork in basements and attics for obvious gaps.

When to Call a Pro

If you have checked the filter, cleaned the outdoor unit, and verified thermostat settings but the AC is still not cooling, the problem is likely refrigerant, electrical, or mechanical โ€” all of which need a tech.
